What the back leg should do

The real problem: not using it

Here's the thing to understand. The issue with the back leg is almost never a matter of hitting some perfect position, it's that a lot of young pitchers barely use it at all. They stand tall and throw with their upper body, leaving the biggest muscles in the delivery, the legs, mostly out of it. Or they spin off the back leg early, bleeding the power forward before it can build. Either way, the arm is left to create velocity it was never meant to generate alone.

First, lower-body strength, the leg has to be strong enough to load and drive, which is why leg and core work is real velocity training. Second, timing and tempo, a controlled gather that lets him load over the back leg before moving, rather than rushing or drifting forward early. Cue the feeling of pushing the ground away toward the plate, and staying back until it's time to go. As with most mechanics, the fix is athletic and connected, not a stiff position to hold.
