Here's what each one means in plain terms, and why it matters.
1. Back leg efficiency is where everything starts. Velocity is built from the ground up, and the back leg is how a pitcher pushes into the ground to create momentum toward the plate and coil up rotational power. An efficient back leg is the difference between a delivery that flows and one that stalls before it begins.
2. Move quality is what happens next: carrying that momentum forward while staying balanced and in control. A good move is smooth and connected, not rushed or drifting. Rushing here is one of the most common things that quietly wrecks both velocity and command, which is part of why a lot of wildness traces back to the lower half.
3. Front leg stability is the brace. When the front foot lands, a firm front leg gives the upper body a solid post to rotate over, so the energy the lower half built transfers up instead of leaking forward. A soft, drifting front knee is one of the biggest places velocity gets lost.
4. Delayed rotation is the timing piece, and it's where a lot of speed lives. When the shoulders wait for the hips to lead, the throw gets its power from sequence instead of extra arm effort. 5. Arm path is the delivery. The arm works best when it's moving in sync with the body, arriving on time rather than dragging behind and trying to catch up. A late, out-of-sync arm doesn't just cost velocity, it's one of the patterns most associated with added arm stress, which we cover in what actually stresses a young arm.
Notice how they connect. Each pillar hands off to the next, from the ground all the way to the release. A delivery is only as strong as its weakest link in that chain, which is why we look at all five instead of fixating on any one.
Why there's no single 'right' delivery
This is the part that matters most, and the part most instruction gets wrong. These five principles are shared. The way they look is not. Two pitchers can both have excellent back leg efficiency and get there with completely different leg lifts. Both can have a clean arm path from different slots.
That's why trying to force a young pitcher into a copied delivery usually backfires. You end up fighting his natural movement instead of cleaning it up. The goal isn't to make him look like someone else. It's to help his own delivery hit these principles better than it did before. Compare him to himself, not to the kid on the highlight reel.
How to know where your pitcher stands
