Why you can't just yell "separate"

Tell a young pitcher to yank his shoulders back and hold them, and you usually get the opposite of what you want: he either flies open early trying to create it, or he stiffens up and loses the smooth sequence that made it work in the first place.
Real separation is a byproduct of a well-ordered delivery: a strong lower half, good tempo, and the patience to let the hips lead. Smooth is fast. You build the sequence, and the separation shows up on its own.
