First and most important: if his arm hurts, he stops throwing and sees a doctor. Pain is never a mechanics question. Beyond that, two things drive most arm stress in young pitchers: workload (too many pitches, too little rest, year-round throwing) and mechanics (a late arm, flying open, and overthrowing all add stress). Let's start where it matters most, before anything else in this article. If your son has arm pain, the answer isn't in a blog post. Stop throwing, and see a doctor. Pain on the inside of a young elbow especially is not something to coach through, ice away, or wait out. Growing arms have soft growth plates, and prompt attention is how a small problem stays small. Nothing below changes that rule.
With that said, most parents asking "is his motion safe" aren't looking at an injury. They're looking at a healthy kid and wondering whether the way he throws is quietly costing him. That's a fair question, and it has a real answer. Two things drive most of the stress on a young pitching arm.

The first one is the proven heavyweight. Overuse (high pitch counts, not enough rest, competitive throwing year-round) is the most established risk factor in youth pitching, and it's the one parents control most directly. We cover the rules for it below. But the second one, mechanics, is where our work lives, and it's the part nobody can see.
The mechanics that overwork an arm

The stress hides. The patterns that create it don't.Nobody can watch a pitch and see the load on an elbow. But certain movement patterns reliably make the arm work harder than it needs to, and those patterns are visible, if you slow the delivery down to individual frames. Three show up most:
- A late, dragging arm. When the arm arrives at throwing position after the front foot has already landed, it plays catch-up under maximum force. Of the common flaws, a late arm is the one most associated with added elbow and shoulder stress.
- Flying open early. When the front side pulls open too soon, the arm gets left behind to do the job the whole body should share, which piles work onto the shoulder and elbow.
- Overthrowing. Max-effort straining on every pitch breaks the timing that lets the big muscles carry the load, so the arm absorbs more of it.
Notice the theme: these are the same efficiency leaks that cost velocity in our mechanics guide. That's not a coincidence. A delivery that wastes velocity and a delivery that overtaxes the arm are usually the same delivery. Cleaning it up does both jobs at once, which is the one honest way to chase velocity that can also take stress off the arm rather than add it.
To be careful with our words: fixing mechanics reduces stress and lowers risk. It does not "prevent injuries," because nothing does, and any arm can get hurt. What clean mechanics do is stop asking the arm to do work the body was built to share.
The workload rules that actually protect him
This is the part with the strongest evidence behind it, and the good news is it's all within your control:
- Respect pitch counts and required rest days. They exist because of real injury research, not bureaucracy. The rest day after a heavy outing is doing invisible, essential work.
- No throwing on three straight days for a youth pitcher, regardless of counts.
- Count all of it. Little League plus travel ball plus lessons plus the backyard is one arm's total workload, even though each coach only counts his own. Someone has to keep the master number, and that someone is you.
- Take real time off. Growing arms need a few months a year completely away from competitive throwing, ideally a couple of them in a row. Year-round baseball is one of the clearest risk factors there is.
- Save breaking balls. Fastball and changeup carry a young pitcher a long way. Curveballs generally wait until the mid-teens, sliders later. Our curveball readiness guide covers the honest version.

A little durability work goes a long way for a young thrower. These are general strengthening exercises for the muscles that support the shoulder and upper back, the kind of thing that helps an arm hold up to the work of throwing. They are not treatment for pain. If something hurts, that's the doctor's department, not a band's.
Standard Band Pull-Aparts

Isolate the upper back and rear shoulders. Do not arch your lower back.

Prone Y & T Liftoffs
Arm CareLie face down with a baseball in each hand, thumbs pointed to the sky. For the Y, reach your arms overhead at an angle to form a Y. For the T, take your arms straight out to the sides to form a T.
Pinch your shoulder blades to lift your arms off the ground, hold for 2 seconds, then slowly lower. Do 8 reps in the Y position, then 8 in the T.
Feel the back of your shoulder doing the work. Do not arch your lower back to get the arms higher.
