Why Does My Son Throw Slower in Games Than in Practice?

The four usual suspects behind the game-day velocity drop, the two-video test that identifies which one, and what to say to a kid who's aiming.

Four causes explain almost every game-day velocity drop: aiming instead of throwing (tension turns an athlete into a dart player), the mound (practice happens on flat ground, games happen on a slope), the stretch (he practices from the windup, then pitches whole games from the stretch), and the tank (adrenaline early, fatigue late). The way to tell which one: film him in both settings and compare the two deliveries side by side.

Every baseball parent knows this scene. He's loose and free playing catch before the game, popping the glove, best arm on the field. Then the first batter steps in, and the kid on the mound is someone else: careful, tight, three or four ticks slower, missing high. Same arm, same day, different pitcher.

Here's the reassuring part up front: this is one of the most common patterns in youth pitching, it's diagnosable, and it's fixable. Four suspects explain almost every case.

The four usual suspects

1. Aiming instead of throwing

The big one, and usually the real answer. In practice, nothing is at stake, so he throws like an athlete: loose, rhythmic, whole body working. In a game, every ball feels expensive, every walk feels like a disaster, and without anyone teaching it to him, he starts steering the baseball. The delivery shortens. The stride gets careful. The arm slows down to guide instead of whip.

The cruel math is that the trade doesn't even pay. Tension is terrible for command. A steering pitcher usually locates worse than a free-and-easy one, so he gives up the velocity and doesn't get the strikes he traded it for.

And here's what we see in the videos that come to us: game pressure doesn't invent new flaws, it amplifies the ones already there. The two we see most in any delivery, overthrowing and flying open early, both get worse when a kid presses. He squeezes harder, the front side leaks open sooner, and the delivery that was barely holding together in practice comes apart under the lights.

2. The mound

A lot of youth practice happens on flat ground: backyards, bullpens without a hill, gym floors all winter. Then the game puts him on a slope that changes where his front foot lands, how his front leg has to brace, and when everything fires. A delivery that repeats beautifully on flat ground can wobble on a hill it rarely visits. If his practice-to-game gap appeared alongside a move to real mounds, this suspect moves to the front of the line.

3. The stretch

Watch how he practices: almost always the full windup. Now watch a youth game: runners are on base constantly, which means he pitches most competitive innings from the stretch, the delivery he almost never rehearses. The stretch has its own rhythm and its own timing, and a kid who has thrown it two hundred times fewer than his windup is effectively pitching games with his second-best delivery.

4. The tank

Adrenaline spends energy fast. A nervous kid burns through his first innings on a racing heart, then runs dry. Add in the season's accumulated workload, short rest, or a growing body having a heavy week, and the fastball that started at his practice number fades as the game goes on. If his velocity starts normal and slides inning by inning, think tank, not technique. And the standing rule applies here too: a tired arm is one thing, a sore one is another. Soreness that lingers means rest, and pain means a doctor before anyone worries about the radar gun.

The two-video test

You can identify the suspect from the bleachers with a phone and ten minutes.

Film him twice from the same side-on angle (our filming guide shows the exact setup): once in practice throwing free and easy, once in a game. Then compare the two deliveries frame by frame at the same checkpoints. Freeze both at front-foot landing. Is the stride shorter in the game clip? Is his chest already facing the hitter in one and not the other? Does the game version look careful where the practice version looks athletic?

If the two deliveries look different, you've found it: the game is changing his mechanics, and now you know exactly which suspect to work on. If the two deliveries look the same and the velocity is still down, you're likely looking at the mound, the stretch, or the tank instead.

What to say to him

The words matter more than most parents think, because the aiming problem is a trust problem, and trust responds to language. What he needs to hear from you, in whatever words are yours: trust your stuff. You already did the hard part behind the scenes. The bullpens, the drills, the catch play: that's where the pitching got built. The game isn't where he makes the delivery. It's where he lets it out.

The gap between the two is coachable.

What doesn't help: radar guns at games, inning-by-inning velocity reports from the bleachers, and postgame breakdowns in the car. A kid who's aiming is already gripping too tight. The job is to loosen him, and that starts with a parent who treats game day like the fun part instead of the exam.

Common questions

Is it normal for kids to throw slower in games than practice?

Very. Small drops of a couple mph are common and often just adrenaline management. Bigger, consistent gaps usually trace to one of four causes: aiming under pressure, unfamiliarity with the mound, pitching from the stretch, or fatigue.

How much velocity drop in games is normal?

A tick or two is nothing to chase. A consistent gap of 4 or more mph between free-and-easy practice throwing and game pitching is worth diagnosing, because something specific is usually causing it.

Does nervousness really lower pitching velocity?

Yes, but indirectly. Nerves themselves don't slow an arm; the tension they create does. A pitcher who starts steering the ball shortens his stride, opens early, and guides the throw, and the velocity goes with it.

Should young pitchers practice from the windup or the stretch?

Both, roughly evenly. Youth games are full of baserunners, so most competitive pitches get thrown from the stretch. A kid who only rehearses the windup is saving his best delivery for the moments that matter least.

How do I figure out which problem my son has?

Film him from the side in practice and again in a game, and compare the two deliveries at the same freeze points. If they look different, it's mechanical or mental.
