Average Pitching Speed by Age (And What to Do If He's Below the Chart)

Where the typical numbers really sit at every age, why the chart matters less than parents think, and the one factor you can actually control.

Quick answer

Most 9–10 year olds throw between 40 and 50 mph. At 11–12, the typical range is 50 to 60. By 13–14 it's 60 to 70, high schoolers generally sit between 70 and 80, and varsity pitchers with college interest usually live in the low-to-mid 80s.

You probably just watched a game and you're wondering where your pitcher stands, so the chart is right up top. Now the part nobody puts under the chart: those numbers matter a lot less than parents think, and the reason a kid sits below them is almost never the reason parents assume.

A few honest notes, because velocity charts get treated like gospel and they shouldn't be. League level matters: the average arm at a 12U travel tournament is not the average arm in a rec league, and both kids are doing fine. And age is a terrible stand-in for the thing that actually drives these numbers, which is physical maturity. Two 12-year-olds can be four years apart in body development. The one who grew four inches over the summer didn't out-train anybody. He just grew first.

If your son is below the chart, read this before you panic

Every velocity chart on the internet creates the same 10 p.m. scene: a parent, a phone, and a knot in their stomach because their kid throws 54 and the table says 60.

So let's be straight about what a below-average number means at age 12. Usually one of three things. He's on the younger side of his growth curve. He's leaking power somewhere in his delivery. Or both. Notice what's not on the list: talent, ceiling, or how far he'll go in baseball. The history of pitching is full of guys who were nobody's radar-gun hero at 12.

“Compare him to himself, not to the kid on Instagram.”

The only chart that predicts anything is his own: March vs. June.

That's the comfort. Here's the challenge, because comfort alone doesn't help him: if the gap bothers him, velocity is not luck, and it's not genetics-or-nothing. At youth ages, the biggest controllable piece of velocity is mechanical. Which brings us to the part of this article that's actually useful.

Where velocity really comes from (it's not the arm)

Watch a kid who throws hard and a kid who doesn't, side by side, and the difference usually isn't effort. It's order.

A pitch is a chain reaction:

When that sequence runs in order, energy stacks up link by link and the ball jumps out of the hand. When it runs out of order, even slightly, energy leaks at every step and the arm tries to make up the difference by muscling it.

“Smooth is fast.”

If every pitch looks violent and max-effort, that's not intensity. That's leakage.

Most young pitchers leak in the same handful of places: hips and shoulders rotating together instead of hips first, a stride that quits short, a front leg that collapses instead of bracing, a glove side that flies open early. Any one of these quietly taxes several mph. A 12-year-old throwing 54 with two of these flaws isn't a 54 mph pitcher. He's a 60 mph pitcher with a delivery problem, and delivery problems can be fixed.

What about strength training?

It matters, and we're not in the camp that pretends otherwise. Stronger legs and a stronger core produce more force for the chain to deliver. But sequence comes first, and here's why: the weight room is a multiplier. It multiplies whatever mechanics you give it. Add strength to a clean delivery and the gains show up on the gun. Add strength to a leaky delivery and you've built a stronger engine for a car with a slipping transmission, and now the arm absorbs even more of the abuse.

For most kids under 14, bodyweight work, sprinting, jumping, and athletic play cover the strength side just fine. The delivery is where the hidden mph are.

The wrong way to add velocity

This section is short because the rule is short:

“Never trade a healthy arm for a number.”

No velocity milestone, no showcase, no season is worth an elbow.

The wrong way looks like this: max-effort throwing every day because “that's how you build it.” Weighted-ball programs pulled off YouTube with no supervision and no plan. Pitching through soreness because there's a tournament this weekend. Twelve months of competitive throwing with no off-season.

None of that is toughness, and none of it is development. Growing arms have open growth plates, and overuse is the most preventable risk factor in youth pitching. So our line never moves: if his arm hurts, he stops throwing, and if pain comes back when he resumes, he sees a doctor. Improving mechanical efficiency is the one path to velocity that can also take stress off the arm rather than pile more on. It's the only shortcut in this sport that isn't a trap.

About that radar gun

Should you even measure a young pitcher's velocity? Sure. A number twice or three times a year is a useful marker, the same way you mark his height on the door frame. Cheap phone apps and pocket radars are accurate enough for tracking a trend, even if the absolute number runs a little hot or cold.

The mistake isn't measuring. The mistake is coaching to the gun. A kid who gets a number shouted at him after every pitch starts overthrowing, and overthrowing breaks the sequence, which lowers the number. Chase the movement. The number follows.

The long game

A 12-year-old's job isn't to throw 70. His job is to build the delivery that throws 85 at 17.

“Little things now, big numbers later.”

The kids who dominate at 17 did the boring fundamentals at 12.

So use the chart for what it's worth, then set it aside and answer the only question that moves anything: is his delivery helping him, or hiding his velocity? That's not answerable from the bleachers. It is answerable from video.

Common questions

How fast should a 12-year-old pitch?

Most 12-year-olds throw between 50 and 60 mph, and anything over about 61 is above average. Wide variation is normal at this age because kids are at very different points of physical development.

Is 70 mph good for a 13-year-old?

Yes. Typical 13-year-olds sit in the low-to-mid 60s, so 70 at 13 is clearly above average. The priority at that speed is protecting the arm and keeping the delivery efficient, not squeezing out more.

How can I measure my son's pitching speed?

A pocket radar or a radar app on your phone works fine for tracking progress. Measure a few times a year under similar conditions and watch the trend, not any single reading.

When should a pitcher start velocity training?

Formal velocity programs are generally a high-school-age conversation, and even then only with supervision. Before that, the highest-return work is mechanical: an efficient, repeatable delivery. That's also the work that carries the least risk.

Why does my son throw slower in games than in the backyard?

Usually it's the mound, adrenaline management, or a delivery that doesn't hold up under game timing. If the gap is large, video of both settings side by side will typically show exactly where the motion changes.
